When To Grow Cannabis Outdoors?

If you want to grow cannabis outdoors, you should know when it is the best time to sow plants, cultivate and harvest them. Cannabis is a strong plant, but even this beautiful lady needs sunlight, water, and nutrients to be able to yield a good harvest. Do you want to get the most yield out of your plants? Below, you find the best tips to use when growing weed.

Should You Grow Cannabis Outdoors Or Inside?

Cannabis can grow inside as well as outside. Inside you use lamps to imitate the sun. Outside you use the real thing: pure sunlight. But that means you are dependent on the seasons and you can’t just pick any random moment to put your plants in the garden.

The plants are sensitive to light. They grow and flower and that process goes in sync with a certain amount of hours of sunlight. You need good timing, if you want a sizable harvest.

Growing Cannabis Outdoors: The Schedule

The growing season of the cannabis plant (in the Netherlands) starts about mid-May. It’s important that there’s no chance of night frost anymore. You can sow earlier, but a couple of times of night frost will do your little seedlings no good.

If you want to grow outside, you could get your cannabis seeds at the end of April. You can let them germinate inside, in a small pot on the window sill. Germination can take anywhere between 24 hours and several days. The small seedlings can safely grow bigger, at least indoors, until the Ice Saints have left (after May 15th).

After that date, you can put the plants outside in a pot or directly into the ground. The more space the plants have for their roots, the bigger they can grow. The weed plants will now start growing nicely. They use the long days and short nights to grow bigger.
Keep looking to your plants as they will show when something is wrong. Healthy green leaves is what you want to see all the way through the end of the season!

Tip: Cannabis is a plant you can train with different techniques. Learn here more about Topping, Fimming, Scrog (Screen Of Green) or SoG (Sea Of green) for an even bigger yield.

After Midsummer the days start to shorten. The cannabis plants will now start to flower. Buds will form, but it’s far from harvest time. The buds will keep developing, until it’s time to harvest in October and November. Note that bad weather around September and October can cause budrot, as it might get too wet and with too less sun and wind it’s the ultimate condition for budrots and you don’t want this as you’ve given love the whole summer! Make sure the plants will stay dry to for example a translucent roof.

This schedule is valid for Northern Europe. The weather in the south of Europe is totally different and this asks for a different way of handling your cannabis plants.

Tips For A Successful Growing Season

It’s important to pick the right seeds for our climate, if you want to grow cannabis outdoors. Different kinds of cannabis not only look different or have different effects, but they also their needs may vary. Some like higher temperatures, others need more or less humidity. In the Netherlands you need a plant that can withstand cold and is able to flower quickly. Indica strains do well here, because they can deal with lower temperatures, compared to sativa. If this is the first time you grow cannabis, you should find a strain that’s easy to cultivate.

It’s also a good idea to keep track of what you do and when you do it. It’s recommended to keep a log and make notes or have a look how others do at Growdiaries.com. This way, you can find out more easily what went right or what went wrong. You could write down the temperatures, how much and how often you gave water or extra nutrition to your plants.

A great option for inexperienced growers, are autoflowering seeds. They are not dependent on the amount of light they receive: they start flowering from the moment they reach a certain height. This can already happen after 2 to 4 weeks.

If people are thinking of cannabis growing outdoor this season: it’s the right time. If you shop cannabis seeds now, it’s just in time to be able to harvest your own product in the fall.
