SupMedi is happy to announce this sponsor deal with Gegard Mousasi!
Gegard Mousasi: The Dreamcatcher
Mousasi has an interesting background as he was actually born in Tehran, Iran to Armenian parents on 1st August 1985 before a relocation saw his family taking him to Leiden, the Netherlands at the age of four. It was here that his interest in combat sports developed, firstly with judo at the age of eight, then boxing at age fifteen, and then kickboxing and finally MMA. He excelled at his pursuits, firstly by becoming an amateur Dutch boxing champion with a 12-1 record (9 knockouts).
His style is based on boxing, kickboxing and judo, and he has a reach of 76 inches, which he uses to excellent advantage. He is also currently ranked as the number 4 MMA fighter in the world at middleweight (according to Fight Matrix).
Track Record
DREAM, which used to be a Japanese mixed martial arts organisation was good for Mousasi, and he became their inaugural DREAM Middleweight Champion back in 2008 in Saitama, Japan. He beat Brazilian Ronald Souza with a KO from an up-kick in this fight at DREAM 6. Then in 2010, he became Light Heavyweight Champion at DREAM 16 by beating local Tatsuya Mizuno with a rear-naked choke.

This made Mousasi the first fighter to win titles at DREAM in two different weight categories, a testament to his professional approach to fitness and training. He defended his title successfully in 2011 by outpunching Hiroshi Izumi. DREAM, unfortunately, went bust in 2012, but Mousasi does carry the nickname ‘Dreamcatcher’ with him as a reminder of his success in Japan.
Back in 2014, in a five-round UFC main event fight, Mousasi took on Brazilian middleweight Lyoto Machida in UFC Fight Night 36. Even though Machida was ultimately declared the winner by unanimous decision, the bout was declared Fight of the Night, which was the first time Mousasi had won this award.
Mousasi signed a six-fight contract with Bellator MMA in July 2017, with his first fight being the main card against Alexander Shlemenko at Bellator 181. Mousasi won this contest by a controversial unanimous decision.
Bellator World Champion
In 2018, Mousasi finally gained the goal he had been working so hard for. He became the Bellator Middleweight World Champion. Although he had tough competition from another Brazillian, Rafael Carvalho at Bellator 200. He managed a TKO in the first round after following up on an early takedown with a ground and pound attack. This achievement gave him another unique first in the world of combat contest. The honour of being the first fighter to win world titles in both Strikeforce and Bellator MMA.
Mousasi successfully defended his title at Bellator 206 against Rory Macdonald from Canada, on September 29, 2018. He also defeated him by ground-and-pound. Mousasi won with a technical knockout in the second round. His next fight was on June 22, 2019 at Bellator 223 in London. The VK was against the American Rafael Lovato Junior, but Mousasi lost due to a divided decision by the referees.
All in all, Mousasi is a five-time world champion in various disciplines. At the time of writing, Mousasi was scheduled for a revenge match against his old rival Lyoto Machida during Bellator 228 on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
