Why Isn’t My Cannabis Seed Germinating? 10 Common Mistakes & Solutions
Three days have passed, and still no action from your cannabis seeds. You don’t see a seedling sprouting from the soil and white tap roots still haven’t merged from the shells with the paper towel method. The short answer is that your cannabis seeds aren’t germinating. As for the reason, there are a handful of explanations for why they haven’t popped yet. Whether it’s bad seeds or bad germination techniques, discover the common ways to mess up the germination process and quick tips to fix it!
Mistake 1: Not using seeds with strong genetics
Quality genetics are the foundation of a successful cultivation. AG cannabis seeds are the best for genetics with a 95% germination rate. When germinated correctly, growers can expect their seeds to germinate most of the time. Weak seeds have poor or unknown genetics that can prevent them from germinating—even under the right conditions.
Solved! Make sure you’re germinating seeds with the best quality with AG cannabis seeds.
Mistake 2: Using old seeds
How long have you had your seeds? One of the common seed starting mistakes is attempting to germinate expired seeds. The enzymes in older seeds are too weak to germinate. Also, the seed’s outer shell can be too hard to absorb water or let the tap root break through.
Solved! Properly stored cannabis seeds can germinate after 10+ years. If your seeds are aged, try soaking them in a water solution before transferring to your favorite germination method. Check our blog for other tricks you can use to get your old beans to pop.
Mistake 3: The temperature isn’t suitable for germination
Cannabis seeds germinate best at 22-26°C (72-78°F). Although they can germinate outside of this range, the seeds have a lower germination rate. Set your seeds at the right temperature or risk them not germinating. Hot temperatures can dry the soil. Cold temperatures can rot your seed before it even has a chance to germinate.
Solved! Use a thermometer to measure the temperature around your germinating seeds. If you need to adjust the temperature, try lowering your grow lights closer to the soil, using a heat mat, or fans.
Mistake 4: Not enough oxygen
Cannabis seeds are living organisms that need oxygen to grow. Oxygen is another critical element necessary for germination to occur. Many growers make the mistake of restricting the amount of air reaching their seed. It’s tempting to use the same soil used for growing a mature plant, but it can be too dense for a young seed. Soil packed too tightly prevents enough oxygen from reaching your seed.
Solved! Light, spongy soil mixtures, such as peat, are recommended for germinating seeds. Also, homemade soil mixes work well.
Mistake 5: Bad planting medium
Your growing medium plays a role in how well it can germinate. Seeds are immediately affected by their environment, since it will be the catalyst for how they absorb water — and potentially other diseases in the soil and water.
Solved! Start with fresh soil and distilled water (pH of 7). Certain germs and diseases can be cured using hydrogen peroxide.
Mistake 6: Moldy or rotting seeds
Healthy plants come from healthy seeds. Moldy or rotting seeds aren’t healthy and can harm plant growth. Bad seeds can come from a poor harvest, improper storage, or planting in the wrong conditions.
Solved! Check all the seeds in the pack. If you receive a bad seed, contact your seed distributor for a replacement or alternative solution. Quickly separate bad seeds from healthy seeds to avoid spreading diseases. Lastly, test one of the methods for saving moldy and rotting seeds.
Mistake 7: Overwatering or not providing enough water
Drowning your seeds is a common seed starting mistake. Growers can give their seeds too much water in the early stages. It’s also possible to not give your seeds enough water to absorb and begin germination. There’s a sweet spot that keeps the soil moist enough for the seed to get precisely what it needs.
Solved! Use a smaller growing medium. Small cups or starter plugs limit the amount of water the medium can hold up to the ideal amount for germination. Using a full-sized pot can lead to overwatering and wasted water.
Mistake 8: Overcrowding the germination area
Planting too many cannabis seeds in one pot is not ideal for germination. The seeds will fight over the resources and can tangle their roots once the seedlings begin to grow.
Solved! Plant one cannabis seed per pot. If you want to germinate multiple seeds at once, try the paper towel method.
Mistake 9: The seed is planted too deep
Growers who push their seed too far down will not see the seedling sprout above the soil. What happens is that the seed may begin germinating underground, but can’t reach the surface fast enough to get light to keep growing. Also, oxygen may be limited due to a lot of soil packed on top of it.
Solved! The best depth to plant your cannabis seeds is about a knuckle deep. Alternatively, use starter plugs that have pre-dug holes at the perfect depth.
Mistake 10: You’re not patient enough
Most cannabis seeds germinate within 3-10 days. Some seeds may sprout quicker, while others may be delayed. Even seeds from the same pack can germinate at different times. Most germination methods recommend checking your seeds within 48-36 hours. Seeds that haven’t germinated yet may not be defective—they just may need a little bit more time.
Solved! Be patient. If you set up your germination method correctly and see results with some seeds, the rest will most likely germinate when they’re ready.
Get the best germination rate by starting with fresh seeds. With high-quality seeds, you can focus on other factors that affect whether your cannabis seeds will germinate. We recommended trying one of the above solutions if you need help germinating AG cannabis seeds.
