How do I Find the Best Climate for My Cannabis Strain?

It’s no secret that we love genetics! While we’ve selected the best strain genetics for our premium cannabis seeds, these genes also determine the best climate for a cannabis strain.

Understanding the origin of dominant strain genes will provide a clue into what type of climate your cannabis seeds prefer. Acapulco Gold’s Mexican origins make it crave hot and sunny climates. Northern Lights hails from northern regions where it thrives best in cooler, damp climate conditions (like we get here in the Netherlands). Hindu Kush emerged from the high altitudes in the mountains to make it favour cooler, dry temperatures. Spain’s Mediterranean climate of hot summers and mild winters gives native strains like Amnesia Haze the best climate conditions to grow.

We feature several cannabis seeds derived from these parent strains and others with unique climate preferences. Our Super Silver Haze contains genetics from the Northern Lights parent strain to make it more resilient when growing in colder temperatures. The Magic OG Kush cannabis seeds contain traces of genetics from Hindu Kush for a preference towards climates rendering higher altitudes.

What’s the Best Climate For Different Cannabis Strains

The type of cannabis seeds you plant will influence the kind of climate settings you use in your growing setup. For the best results in a small grow setup, find cannabis strains that use similar climate conditions. Here are a few categories of cannabis seeds to consider for your next home cultivation:

Best climate: Indica vs. Sativa Strains

There are several differences between indica and sativa strains. In addition to the plant structure, effects, and terpene profiles, each has a preferred climate condition to produce the best crops. Many Indica-dominant strains come from cooler regions. Climate conditions in these areas create a shorter growing season and cooler nights. Indica-dominant cannabis seeds have a faster flowering time to make them thrive in shorter seasons. The short, bushy plants are more adapted to receiving less sunlight to produce large yields.

Genetics common in sativa cannabis seeds are derived from warmer, tropical climates. The more sunlight these cannabis plants get, the better they will grow. They’re larger plants with longer leaves to maximize the amount of sunlight they get.

Exploring hybrid strains offers flexibility in growing conditions. These cannabis seeds contain genetics from Indica and Sativa strains, making them more adaptable to various climates. These are great for beginner growers.

Best climate: Indoor vs. Outdoor Strains

The evolution of cannabis through cross-breeding has created a blend of genetics tailored to growing indoors or outdoors. Strains growing in a natural outdoor setting are more resilient in surviving harsh weather conditions. Strawberry Glue and Tangerine G13 are great outdoor strains.

Indoor strains require more climate control. These genetics have adapted to being in perfect climate conditions, from the temperature to timed light cycles, to produce the best results. These seeds will be less resilient in adapting to unfavourable climates, so you must keep an eye on them during the growing cycle.

Best climate: Autoflower vs. Regular Seeds

Autoflower cannabis seeds are genetically engineered to enter the flowering stage within a few weeks. They have a shorter growing cycle compared to regular seeds. This automated flowering process eliminates the need to change the lighting cycle, watering process, or temperatures to continue growing. They’re more adaptable to various climates since their growth is based on time instead of environment. Autoflower seeds are also great for beginners due to their adaptability to different conditions.

Regular seeds are more sensitive to climate conditions. These are excellent for growing indoors when cultivators can tailor their setup to the best climate conditions for the cannabis strain.

Best cannabis seeds to grow in warm weather

Cannabis seeds for warm weather have long flowering times, grow large, and love sunlight! If you’re growing outdoors in a warm climate or have a grow setup similar to a tropical environment, these are our favourite cannabis seeds to grow in warm weather:

Best cannabis seeds to grow in cold weather

Cannabis strains with shorter flowering periods work best in colder climates. If you’re in a colder region or keep your grow tent temperatures moderately cool, these strains will produce excellent results:

Finding the right climate for your grow setup

Growing a new cannabis strain is exciting, but surprises always arise when experimenting with new strains. Getting the right climate for a successful harvest of one strain does not mean a different strain will yield the same. Growers must constantly adjust the climate in their grow setup to match the strain and growing stage. Here are a few simple steps growers can take to find the best climate for different cannabis strains.

Understand the parent strains of your cannabis seeds – we provide information about parent strains for each of our cannabis seeds.
Start with the general best climate for cannabis—read here for the best weather for growing cannabis.
Monitor your plant – notice if it grows strong and healthy or shows signs of deficiency or disease.
Make adjustments – keep your cannabis cultivation setup adaptable to adjust for different climate conditions.
