Study Reveals: Women Have More And Better Sex With Cannabis!

Does life between the sheets get better with weed? A study from a somewhat unexpected angle shows that women who use cannabis have more and better sex. A research team at Stanford University in California recently revealed some tantalizing results. Good news for Amsterdam Genetics fangirls, then – after all, the best cannabis gets you the best sex, don’t you agree?

Cannabis and sex – a smokin’ hot combination? A new study seems to prove just that. According to the results, an increasing frequency of cannabis use is linked to improved sexual function, more and better orgasms, higher sexual desire and increased satisfaction after having sex. The researchers revealed their findings based on the latest US study results.

The research team, affiliated with the local university hospital, worked with a chain of legal cannabis shops. Female customers of these companies were asked to participate in the study via an anonymous survey. In this way they were able to collect data from 452 women. The results were published in 2020 in the academic journal Sexual Medicine.

Weed As An Aphrodisiac: ‘Female Sexual Function Index’

So how do you prove whether cannabis is an actual aphrodisiac? A well-known way of mapping female sexuality is the Female Sexual Function Index, also called the FSFI survey. On the basis of this questionnaire, women can indicate how they experience their sex life. The higher this score turns out, the better a person functions sexually.

Weed, women, and sex: what does science say?

Of the 452 women enrolled in the study, 72.8% used cannabis on a daily basis. In three quarters of these cases, they smoked dried cannabis. This group of women reported higher FSFI scores than female participants who used less or no cannabis. According to researchers, this is particularly visible in the field of sexual desire.

Don’t Cannabis Types And Intake Methods Have An Effect On Sex?

The researchers also concluded that the effect works both ways. The less intensive the use of cannabis, the higher the risk of sexual dysfunction in women. In other words, cannabis makes women more willing to engage in sexual activity, and moreover, they are more satisfied with the sex they have.

It is also noteworthy that the method of cannabis consumption and chemovar types do not consistently influence FSFI scores or the likelihood of sexual dysfunction. In other words, the type of weed and the way it is used make little difference. The results show that edibles are every bit as effective as joints or bongs. So much for the notion that the way to the heart is through the stomach…

Don’t Strains And Weed Variants Make Any Difference?

In spite of these results, connoisseurs often claim that strains and weed variants have a definite impact on how often and how well they get laid. That may well be due to the various cannabinoid and terpene profiles out there today.

A Nose For Good Sex

Emotions, feelings, and scents are interconnected at a deep physiological level. We’ve all been there: you notice a specific smell and it instantly triggers a strong emotional response. The scent of weed can spark recollections of earlier experiences; especially if the smell is associated with good memories. However, such associations could also be triggered by terpenes in certain strains, which are responsible for the scent and flavour of weed. Over 100 cannabis terpenes have been discovered so far; each with their own subtle effects on your high.

cannabis better sex life

Some terpenes, such as limonene, cause uplifting and vitalizing effects. Other terpenes like myrcene have a calming influence instead. All of these effects can play a part in the experience of sex; so by this line of reasoning, weed types and strains can make a big difference, no matter how personal these differences may be.

Sativa And Indica Strains: A Sexy Mind Or A Horny Body?

On top of the above, the different effects of indica and sativa strains may also have an impact on the link between sex and cannabis. Put very crudely, sativa strains tend to cause uplifting effects that focus on the mind. Indica strains, by contrast, usually cause more physically oriented effects and focus on relaxation. Logically, we might expect these different effects to influence sexual experiences in different ways. For some, sex may be more of a mental experience, whereas for others, the focus is more on the bodily aspects. Incidentally, these experiences tend to differ between men and women, too.

It seems as if we are a long way off from a final verdict on cannabis and sex, then. Let’s see what science can tell us about the ‘why’ behind weed and better sex.

Why Does Cannabis Improve Your Sex Life?

So far, researchers have failed to pinpoint exactly why cannabis can improve the sex lives of women. However, other studies have explored how the use of phytocannabinoids present in weed can have positive sexual effects. However, such effects have not been proven conclusively, and they are far from uncontroversial.

More Cannabis, Less Tension, More Sex

One of the basic assumptions of the research team is that cannabis has a positive effect on the CB1 receptors of the human endocannabinoid system (ECS). CB1 receptors in this important system are partly responsible for the serotonergic neurons that secrete serotonin. Serotonin in turn plays an important role in female sexuality.

The team also states that many cannabis consumers use weed to feel less anxious, tense, and restrained. Reduced anxiety and inhibitions could have positive effects on sex drive, sexual experience, and feeling of sexual empowerment. This in turn would have the effect of increasing levels of satisfaction, orgasms and sexual arousal. In addition, THC can change the perception of time. This mean it can prolong the feeling of sexual pleasure, according to the research team.

More Research On The Link Between Cannabis And Sex

While the latest research into the effect of cannabis on female perception of sexuality is interesting, it is by no means the first research exploring the relationship between cannabis and (better) sex. It certainly won’t be the last, either, because there are many more questions left unanswered.

Differences In Weed Consumption Between Men And Women Are Decreasing

An earlier study investigated the differences in effects of cannabis use between men and women. In recent years, sex difference in cannabis use and its frequency have started to decrease. Yet even though women are closing the gap, they don’t necessarily enjoy weed for the same reasons men do. This is a fascinating find, and it just begs for further research. One 2017 study, for instance, demonstrated that men and women experience the effects of cannabis differently. That could go a long way towards explaining why women who use cannabis report having more and better sex, while men do not necessarily report the same. Still, there are plenty of other explanations left to explore.

Watering Cannabis Plants: How, When, And How Much?

Watering cannabis plants doesn’t sound like a big deal; any idiot can do that, right? Well, wrong, actually. There’s a bit more technique involved in watering weed than simply sloshing some H2O at your pots every once in a while. At least, that’s not going to do if you’re aiming for strong, healthy plants with big, beautiful buds. Watering cannabis plants is all about finding that sweet spot between giving too much water, or giving too little instead. If you approach watering marijuana the wrong way, you may cause nutrient shortages, or your plants could get sick. To prevent that from happening, this blog gives you a clear guide to wearing cannabis plants, including how much to give, when to do it, and in what way.

The Art Of Watering Cannabis Plants

Watering cannabis plants may not be the first challenge that comes to mind when ordering marijuana seeds to grow. Most people think they’ll be fine as long as you just keep their feet wet. It’s not quite that simple, though. Growers looking for strong, healthy plants should be careful about how much water they give; when they do it, and how they keep them watered. Sure, talking about the art of watering weed may sound awfully zen, but there is an art to it nonetheless. If you just keep the following guidelines to heart, it can really up your growing game.

Why Weed Needs Water

Without water, there would be no weed plants – it’s that simple. But what do cannabis plants actually use all that water for? It seems so obvious, but here are six reasons for watering your marjuana grow – bet you didn’t know all six of them…

1) Cannabis plants are almost 90% water. They need water to keep their cells firm so the plant remains steady and upright while retaining its structure.

2) Plants need water for photosynthesis. That means without water, plants would have no energy to store, or to use for growing and flowering.

3) Seeds won’t germinate without water. As you can see, even the very first step of any grow is 100% dependent on water.

germinate seeds scaled 3

4) Water is necessary for transporting and absorbing nutrients. Although a plant’s roots absorb nutrients from the soil, they can only do so if nutrients are dissolved in water.

5) Plants use water for ‘transpiration’ so they can keep their temperature stable when it gets (too) hot.

6) Soil life needs water, and without the right life forms in the ground, many vital processes would stop working.

Right. Now that we know why we need to water our cannabis plants, let’s proceed to the best water management techniques.

The Main Danger: Too Much Of A Good Thing

Everyone knows that water is essential for a plant’s survival. What many people don’t know, however, is that too much water can harm or even kill a plant. It’s all about having too much of a good thing, really. Most rookie growers tend to give too much water to their plants rather than letting them dry out. That is why you should always be sparing in watering cannabis plants, as you’re more likely to cause problems by overwatering than by dehydrating them. In fact, for very young plants, even the splash that your average watering can produces can be harmful. There’s your first lesson on watering cannabis plants already, then: don’t damage shoots and roots by using a watering can for seedlings and young plants. The best way to go with the little ladies is to use a spray nozzle instead.

spraying seedlings young plants
Spraying water is better for young plants.

The next tip is more of a where than a how, really. Always start watering cannabis near the stem of the plant, and work your way towards the edge of the pot from there. This encourages the plants to extend its roots outwards to all sides. A more elaborate root system equals a stronger plant with better resilience to outward influences. This applies both to plants raised in pots and to marijuana grows in open soil.

Learning When To Water Cannabis Plants

Too much or too little water can be equally bad for marijuana plants. How much water any individual plant needs depends on several factors, including the stage of its life cycle, soil type, and temperature. As a basic principle, keep in mind that cannabis plants have to be watered every two to three days. The exact watering frequency is determined by the variables listed below.

Indoor Or Outdoor Grow?

Let’s start with an obvious one: watering outdoor grows is very different from watering cannabis indoors. Inside, growers provide every last drop of water themselves, while outdoor growers have to take drought and rainfall into account. Although this is part of the charm of growing weed in a natural environment, it does add some complications to the process (or at least, different complications). The following tips all apply to outdoor grows, with one crucial addition. Always keep close track of how much rain falls, and when, using a simple rain gauge or similar technique.

While applying the tips from this blog, always take into account what nature has already provided. In dry, hot weather, water evaporates from the plant and from the soil at increased rate. That means you’ll have to water more often. Rainy days can make watering almost unnecessary. In fact, if it keeps pouring for days on end, finding your plants some shelter can be a good idea. Obviously, that’s not going to work for plants out in the open soil, but this problem is partly offset by better drainage than your average flower pot.

Indoor Watering

Indoor grows grant much more control over the grow environment. Temperature and air humidity can be kept stable, allowing growers to curb evaporation rates. However, watering cannabis indoors poses its own set of challenges. If you forget to water your plants, there is no natural backup rainfall to save them. On the other hand, you don’t want to overwater them either. That is why indoor growers usually work by cycling from wet to dry, letting their grow medium dry out almost entirely before adding new water.

Indoor growers differ in the level of automation they use. Some grow systems are fully automatic, watering at given times with all the nutrients added to the liquid. Others just use a watering can instead, and then there are many grow setups that are somewhere between these ends of the spectrum. Generally speaking, the less tech and automation you use, the more you should use the guidelines in this blog for careful watering of your cannabis grow.

Ebb And Flow

When growing weed indoors, watering can be arranged by using an ebb and flow setup. This involves temporarily submerging the roots of the plant, allowing them to absorb water rapidly. Usually, nutrients are already added to the water in advance, and the water is flushed out afterwards. That calls for regular refreshment of the water reservoir to deny fungi and bacteria a foothold.

Grow Medium And Watering Cannabis Plants

The soil type in which you decide to grow your cannabis affects the preferred frequency of watering. Different grow mediums have different properties. Clay, for instance, has very good water retention, while sand has excellent drainage properties. Cannabis prefers loose soil that is capable of draining away excess moisture fast. That’s why you should remember to drill a few holes in the bottom of your pots. If you don’t, water will collect in the lower soil strata, which will get you in trouble eventually.

grow medium watering cannabis plants

No matter whether you grow indoors or out, the following summary lists some of the main benefits and drawbacks of various grow mediums:

(Potting) Soil: Depending on composition, soil or potting soil provides growers with rich organic soil life, good drainage, and adequate retention capacity (ability to trap moisture). Many soil types offer their own supply of nutrients, reducing the need to add fertilizer. Natural soil also has high buffering capacity, which adds stability to the grow and limits the impact of mistakes.

Perlite/ Clay Pellets: Growers often add perlite or clay pellets to their grow medium to amp up water retention capacity. This extends the wet-to-dry cycle, reducing the need to water often. Clay pellets can also help keep evaporation in check in hot weather.

Coco Fibre/ Coco Peat: Coco fibre can be used as a grow medium instead of potting soil. It is highly effective at trapping water, thus prolonging the wet-to-dry cycle. That means you should pay extra attention to remaining moisture, because the risk of overwatering is bigger

Rock wool: Rock wool is an alternative to soil used almost exclusively indoors. This fibrous material has excellent water retention power as well as good drainage capacity, which generally decreases the requi威而鋼
red watering frequency, too.

Hydroponics: Growing cannabis using hydroponics is an altogether different affair. This method involves growing plants directly in water, without using soil or any grow medium whatsoever. The water holds all the necessary nutrients if you do it right. As you’ll understand, the guidelines in this blog do not apply to hydroponic grows. You can read more about hydro grows in our dedicated hydroponics blog.

Water Quality

Especially when growing weed indoors, water quality makes all the difference. This is where individual approaches differ considerably, though, mainly because many weed growers only have access to regular tap water. Of course, tap water quality varies wildly between regions and countries, but generally speaking, cannabis plants can handle whatever spills from the tap. Growers living in hard water areas (where groundwater and tap water contain high levels of calcium) may want to purify their cannabis water supply to prevent mineral deposits, though. Weed can suffer from calcium and other mineral deposits. High-tech indoor growers should note that mineral deposits can damage automatic irrigation systems too.

Ideally, the purest and – according to many – best water quality comes with purified reverse osmosis (RO) water. This can be tricky to come by in large quantities, however, so we are just going to leave the suggestion here and repeat that generally speaking, clear tap or rain barrel water will do nicely.

Outdoor growers can also install a rain barrel for a water reservoir. This takes some planning ahead, but on the plus side, it can seriously cut water expenditure and ecological footprints, as well as supporting any attempt to grow weed organically. Incidentally, building your own filter for water barrels is not as hard as it may seem.

Clean, fresh water is always a good idea; however, pH values and nutrient contents are equally essential.

The Right pH For Watering Cannabis Plants

Cannabis plants can make the best use of water that is slightly acidic, at pH values (representing acidity) of about 6.5. You can use a pH meter to gauge whether your water is too acidic, or too alkaline instead. If that happens, the roots become unable to absorb the nutrients from the grow medium. That will slow down growth and could eventually be fatal. Here too, outdoor grows in open oil are less vulnerable to acidity fluctuations; indoor growers should pay extra attention to pH.

ph meter marijuana plants
pH meters are useful tools for any grower.

Adding Nutrients, Yes Or No?

Then there is the question of which nutrients, if any, to add to the water you’re using. There are as many preferences as there are growers when it comes to nutes, but being cautious is always a good idea. Nutrient deficiency harms plant development over time. Overfeeding can cause ‘nutrient burn’, which will also prove fatal in the long run. Here too, the grow medium makes a big difference. In pottin犀利士
g soil, for instance, many of the important nutrients are already naturally present, whereas rock wool offers no nutrition at all. As mentioned earlier, many indoor growers automatically use premixed vats of water and nutrients, with different composition for growth and flowering stages, specifically attuned to what the plants need at any given time.

The Life Cycle Stage Of Your Plants

Young plants and seedling require less water than larger, more mature plants. Generally speaking, the bigger a plant gets, the more water it needs. Yet even though nutrient requirements can change as cannabis passes from growth to flowering stage, the demand for water tends to rise stably with plant size irrespective of these stages.

cannabis spray

Flushing Before The Harvest

Growers also use water to flush their plants before harvesting. By giving only pure, nutrient-free water in the lasts two weeks before harvest time, the plant flushes out any leftover nutrients, for a harvest that is as pure as can be.

Temperature And Light

Light and temperature also co-determine your cannabis watering regime. Generally speaking, your plants will grow more slowly in cool conditions than in warm weather. That is why a rapid-growing plant standing in the full sunshine will need more water and nutrients than a grow in colder conditions, all other things being equal.

How Much Water Does A Cannabis Plant Need?

So how much water should you give to one pant? As a rule of thumb, watering up to 25-30% of the total pot volume (the flower pot, that is) should do the trick. That gives the plant enough water to absorb all the nutrients it needs, without soaking the soil to the point where problems arise. Still, even if you know how much water to give, you’ll need to know when to water your plants for successful growing.

When Is It Time To Water Cannabis Plants?

To some extent, growing marijuana is always a matter of intuition. Good growers, however, will keep a close watch on their plants to detect just when they need a splash of fresh water to drink. For outdoor growers, the advice is not to water plants during the hot hours of the day, as the sun can easily burn the leaves at high noon. Wait until the sun starts to set, or get up early and water your plants before the sunlight hits them.

For indoor growers, the best course of action is determining their own wet-to-dry cycles. Do keep in mind, however, that plants will finish their water rations faster as they grow bigger, or if temperatures rise for instance. Indoors as well as out, paying constant attention to water conditions remains crucial.

Whether you grow inside or out, though, you can use the following simple checks to quickly determine the moisture balance of your plants:

Fingers In The Dirt

A very simple method of finding out whether your plants are thirsty is simply to stick your finger in the soil, down to about 5cm depth. You’ll feel whether the top soil stratum has dried out easy enough. Even though you won’t get all the way to the middle of the pot in this way, you will have a rough indication of whether it’s time for water yet. In normal conditions, the top 5cm of the soil will dry out in two or three days, so you’ll know when it’s time to get your hose or watering can ready.

dry soil moist ground weed plant

Weighing Pots

Another method to check whether the soil is dry is to weigh your pots. Put your pots on a scale while the soil is dry. Now, water the plants and weigh again. Regular weight checks are a good indication of when it’s time for watering.

How To Recognize Water Issues

Now that you know how and why to water cannabis plants, we round up with a few water issue symptoms. That will help you detect moisture management problems early on. There is a catch, however: some of these symptoms can signal water deficiencies as well as surpluses. So if you spot the signs of water issues, always check whether your grow medium is too dry or too damp (once again using your fingers). That way, you’re making sure you don’t pick the wrong solution and kill of your grow instead of saving it!

watering cannabis plants

Limp Leaves: Not Enough Or Too Much Water

Dehydrated plants lack so much moisture inside their cells that they grow limp. Be sure to check whether the soil is dry, though. This is important, because plants can go limp after receiving too much water, too. Thirsty plants will display fragile, softened leaf structures, though, whereas drowning plants have dark green, curling leaves.

If the soil turns out to be dry, water your plant right away and watch the leaves pop back up. Don’t wait too long; weed can handle a bit of a dry spell, but regular droughts will make it difficult for them to bounce back up.

Leaves Turning Yellow Or Brown: Nutrients, Water, And Balance

If your plants are chronically dehydrated, you will notice the signs in their discoloured leaves. They may turn yellow or brown on the edges, or the leaf can lose colour altogether. What actually happens is that your cannabis grow is unable to absorb sufficient nutrients, which will retard growth and prove fatal if left unchecked.

yellow cannabis leaves

Don’t jump to conclusions, however, as yellow leaves can signal other problems than water shortages as well. Too much water can cause discolouration too, so check your grow medium before you intervene. Moreover, too much or too little nutrition can produce similar symptoms, as can light stress. That’s why you should always pinpoint the actual cause of leaf discolouration before you act.

Swollen Leaves

If the leaves of your weed plants appear swollen, similar to basil leaves for example, you are probably giving them too much water. In this case, you’re fairly certain to tackle the issue by cutting back on your watering schedule. Do make sure your drainage is in order, though, as blockages can cause water to accumulate at the bottom of the pots.

Muddy Or Bone-Dry Soil

If the soil in your pots keeps looking like mud or damp clay, you are either messing up your drainage, or you are giving too much water. Add some clay pellets or similar material to your medium to improve drainage capacity. Also make sure the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot are unobstructed. A bit of gardening mesh or some pottery shards at the bottom of the pots can help prevent them clogging up.

If the top stratum of your soil resembles a patch of the Sahara Desert, chances are you’re working with dry dirt. Try to increase the water supply, but be gentle about it or you may end up drowning your plants instead.

Defoliating Cannabis Plants: Pruning Weed The Right Way

When you think about growing cannabis, pruning and defoliating may not be the first things to come to mind. After all, growers work hard to get more plant rather than less, so cutting feels intuitively wrong. Besides, a robust marijuana plant hardly resembles typical pruning species like boxwood or a rose bush. Also, many growers consider pruning and defoliating cannabis plants unnecessary, or in fact counterproductive. The truth is, though, that pruning and defoliating cannabis plants can be rewarding if you do it right. Learn how and when to cut weed leaves for healthier, bigger plants in this blog.

The Benefits Of Pruning And Defoliating Cannabis Plants

Pruning and defoliation are techniques all gardeners use to shape their plants and keep them looking neat and tidy. Without pruning, plants can easily grow too big for their intended spaces, or they can push out neighbouring plants. When it comes to growing cannabis seeds, however, there are other reasons to consider pruning, and particularly the technique known as defoliation. A grower who handles it the right way can actually use the technique to improve their harvest.

pruning defoliating cannabis plants

Defoliation literally means removing foliage, i.e., leaves, from the plant. Removing leaves in the right place will allow more light and air to reach other parts of the plant, including the buds and lower foliage. Especially for growers with limited (indoor) space available, learning how to defoliate is really worthwhile. It allows you to make the most of a minimal number of plants. The technique is not very much suited for beginners, however. Defoliating weed plants takes some careful planning. It’s also crucial to proceed with caution if you want to avoid damaging your plants. If you’re not sure whether defoliating is your kind of thing, don’t worry; cannabis plants can manage perfectly well without defoliation or pruning, whether grown indoors or outside.

Different Cannabis Pruning Techniques

Actually, pruning cannabis plants is too much of a catchall term for practical use. Growers have several different pruning techniques to choose from. Some of these are high-risk interventions, since they can easily damage the plant and cause stress as a result. These ‘high stress’ pruning techniques include fimming and topping, for instance. These involve removing the growth tips or cutting them in half to encourage production of more new growth tips.

defoliating pruning cannabis

Defoliating, however, can be considered a ‘low risk’ pruning technique, although stress and damage can only be contained by modest cutting and knowing when to stop. That’s why we’ve added a defoliation crash course below.

What Does Defoliation Mean?

Put simply, defoliation is the removal of leaves. Obviously, this isn’t a random process, but rather a matter of carefully and deliberately picking the right leaves to prune away. The goal is to create a stronger, healthier plant. Defoliating works by giving the plant a fair chance to direct its energy to the parts that need it most. Ideally, these are also the parts that growers like best – usually the buds.

Leaves dying off is a perfectly natural part of the cannabis growth cycle. By removing the leaves that are prone to fall off, you save the plant from spending valuable nutrients and energy in parts that it will shed anyway. Removing these leaves minimizes the effort your plant needs to grow. That means more energy is left to maintain healthy leaves and produce new ones. This is how defoliating cannabis plants can promote growth and production of new branches, which leads to new buds in turn.

pruning yellow cannabis leaves trimming defioliating
Yellow leaves are a good starting point for pruning.

The Best Way To Handle Defoliating

Defoliating cannabis plants is a useful technique for growers. However, if you’re not that experienced yet, it is best to start out slowly.

A few tips for beginners:

  • Only remove the leaves that already look unhealthy (brown or yellow edges; dry and shrivelled leaves, or foliage damaged by predation);
  • You can remove the big fan leaves from branches you have cut before, once you notice they start to grow new leaves. The older leaves will turn brown and die by themselves, eventually. That means you can safely remove them;
  • As a general rule of thumb, try not to remove more than 10 – 15% of the total canopy.

If you plan to defoliate cannabis plants, always use the appropriate tools for the job. Don’t tear leaves off by hand. Use sharp cutters, shears, secateurs, or a pruning knife. It’s also generally a god idea to water plants right after defoliation and pruning, possibly adding some extra nutrients, but don’t take it too far. If used moderately, water and the right nutrition can help plants recover faster.

Defoliation: Advanced Grower Tips

These beginner tips can help encourage plant growth and promote better harvests. For advanced growers, however, defoliating cannabis plants can hold many more benefits. The technique enables directing growth, efficient use of lighting, and in doing so, substantially increasing harvest results.

Once a cannabis plant has matured sufficiently, its larger fan leaves can be pruned away. These cast a lot of shade, preventing the light from reaching the lower strata of foliage. Next, you can remove the leaves growing near the main stem, which can also obscure the buds from the light. And finally, you can cut away yellow aging leaves. The trick is to remove enough leaves to maximize the profit for your plant (increased availability of light and improved air flow), without going too far and undermining the plant’s health. If you get it just right, your plants will have more energy left to invest in bud growth, resulting in larger, more compact colas.

cannabis plant fim training trimming cutting
Less leaves, more light; bigger buds.

When To Start Pruning And Defoliating Cannabis Plants

Never start defoliating cannabis plants before they enter the second week of the vegetative phase, or growth stage, of their regular life cycle. At that point, you can already see the final shape of the plants shine through. If you are growing indica weed, it’s best to wait another week, as these tend to grow at a slightly slower pace than sativas do. You can continue defoliating cannabis plants up until the second week of the flowering stage. After that, pruning is not advisable, as the plant will not have enough strength left to recover.

Pruning And Defoliating Cannabis Plants: Know What You’re Getting Into

So, all things considered, is defoliating cannabis plants a good idea? The tricky bit with this technique is the lack of solid general guidelines. It is basically a matter of developing some grower’s intuition, which results from carefully observing your plants’ behaviour. If you’re just starting out (i.e., if you have less than three grows under your belt), it’s probably best to leave it alone. Take the time to get to know your plants, and learn to recognise a healthy, fully grown cannabis plant first. If you do have a bit of experience, then pick only a few plants to practice your defoliation skills. That way, if anything goes wrong, at least you’ll still have a few healthy specimens left.

Growers who are keen to learn more about the various techniques available for improving harvests should have a look at our other Grow Blogs. Interventions such as FIMming, supercropping, or low stress training can all yield interesting results. Some of these techniques are very easy to use, even for novice growers. Of course, combining techniques is an option too, as long as you don’t stress out your plants too much. Stress can seriously impair a plant’s growth, flowering, and harvest potential as well as turn it into a hermaphrodite, so whatever you do, proceed with caution and use the advice of experts to your advantage!

Grow Guide 4: Topping Cannabis Plants

As you may recall from Sista Mary’s previous Grow Blog, her Skyrocket cannabis triplets were doing well in the sunny Dutch outdoors. Two weeks ago, the THC Girls Theresa, Hilda and Caroline were repotted into their new mortar tub accommodations. They had grown well past the seedling stage and holding their own against the elements. By now, they have advanced even further towards becoming fully mature cannabis plants. Time for a new grower’s technique. Today, Sista Mary explains how she goes about topping cannabis plants.

Skyrocket Cannabis In The Vegetative Phase

Oh, how fast these little girls grow up! Just a few weeks back, they were emerging from their seeds as they germinated. Then, they rocketed through the seedling phase of the cannabis life cycle, sprouting their first leaves and shooting up towards the sun. The aphids discussed in the previous episode are all gone, munched away by the ladybugs nature provided for free. The past weeks brought some much needed summer showers, so watering the plants was easy. There’s still enough nutrients in the soil, so these ladies are doing just fine.

Skyrocket great cannabis seeds

Now, safe in their bigger flowerpots, the THC Sistaz have truly entered the vegetative stage of their lives. This phase is marked by rapid growth, as the main stem grows taller, the root system expands underground, and the first side branches start putting on extra leaves to catch as much light as they can. Everything is directed at growth in the vegetative phase. However, if you want your weed plants to grow wide instead of just getting taller, you will need to top your plants.

What Is Topping Cannabis Plants?

Topping is a common technique used by gardeners on all sorts of plants. Topping means pruning away the top section of the plant; you simply cut away the end section of the main stem. So why would you top a cannabis plant, you may wonder? Doesn’t it hurt or damage your weed? Well, in fact topping weed plants can have a negative effect on their growth if you get it wrong. That’s why Sista Mary is here to explain how to do it properly!

Why Top Your Weed Plants?

By topping cannabis plants, you redirect the way your crops grow and evolve. Without topping, cannabis has the drive to grow upwards, becoming a big, tall plant with a single main bud, also known as a cola. A cannabis plant will usually develop more than one cola, but the main cola will be the biggest flower bud to harvest later on.

Topping cannabis plants
Big Buds? Yes, I’ll Have Two, Please!

Remember that the cola is where all the good stuff like THC develops in the flowering stage. Now, if you ‘convince’ your plant to grow laterally, i.e., sideways rather than just up to the sky, you will get more branches that grow outward. If you do it right, you’ll get more cola flower buds on these side branches. Yes, they will be a bit smaller than the single bud you’d get without topping. Still, taken together, these smaller buds will yield more harvestable cannabis for you to enjoy. In addition, shorter plants are easier to manage both indoors and out. Thirdly, a broad canopy of leaves will catch more light for your plant to invest in its development. All in all, topping cannabis plants makes sense for most growers. Of course, you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to – after all, they’re still your plants!

Topping Cannabis Plants The Right Way

Two things are important when topping marijuana: timing and location. Starting with the ‘when’, you should wait until your plants have several sets of leaves growing out from the main stem. The points where the side branches supporting the leaves connect are called nodes. In the picture below, you can see how the spaces between nodes are called internodes. Wait until your plants have at least three sets of nodes before topping them. Cutting the top section away is stressful for weed plants; they could turn into hermaphrodites if you top too early or too severely, which could ruin your harvest. With at least three sets of nodes, they should be strong enough to cope and grow two new side branches at the node below the point where you topped them.

Skyrocket grow guide topping
Spaces Between Nodes Are Called Internodes

The ‘where’ kind of follows from the ‘when’. Once your plant has three sets of nodes, you can top them above the third node. Removing the tip of the stem will force the plant to grow two new petioles (side branches) that will evolve into new branches with flower buds. Make a clean cut just above the node. After that, your plant should look like the image below.

Topped skyrocket plant
The Plant After Topping

Topping Cannabis Plants More Than Once

If you want, you can top your plants more than once. Just give them enough time to recover from the first cutting and see how they do. Topping several times will lead to even more lateral growth and even more flower buds if you succeed. Of course, the risk of damage also increases with each topping. Just make sure you plan topping cannabis plants the right way: don’t proceed into the flowering stage.

Growing weed at home
Two New Branches Where The Old One Used To Be!

Topless Ladies

So what do the THC Sistaz look like now that they are ‘topless’? Well, after about ten days, the new side branches growing from the node are looking strong and healthy, developing new nodes and leaves as they grow outward and back up again. There are individual differences between the plants, though. Theresa is a bit slower than her Sistaz Hilda and Caroline, lagging behind in growth. That doesn’t necessarily mean she will be less productive, however. Once the flowering stage begins, we will see how each lady buds out. For now, the two Big Sistaz are showing off their pretty, hand-sized leaves and Theresa is following close behind.

All three ladies are now ready for the full glare of the summer sun. After summer solstice on June 21, the days will start to shorten. We will be keeping a close eye on their progress, as the Skyrocket Sistaz make their way to the flowering phase while the autumn approaches!

The Best Cannabis Strains For Fatigue

Can cannabis help tackle fatigue? Sure, we all feel tired sometimes, but fatigue soon becomes a problem if its is chronic. Fatigue can have a number of different causes. Not getting enough sleep is a tempting catchall explanation, but pain and stress are common causes of tiredness, too. Fatigue is a problem that persists throughout the day. Energy levels are low, usually accompanied by a lack of motivation, grumpy moods, and sub-par performance. No matter what causes your tiredness, though, it may be a good idea to see whether weed can help.

Wait A Minute – Doesn’t Cannabis Make People Sleepy?

Using cannabis against fatigue; most people will find that a curious idea at first glance. You can almost hear them think: but doesn’t weed make you sluggish, interested in nothing but lying on the couch? Well, we really need to lose that cannabis stereotype if we want to tackle tiredness and chronic fatigue with cannabis.

There are so many strains out there, each carrying unique properties, that their effects vary widely; including effects on sleep and tiredness. Some weed strains will make your eyelids heavy in seconds, while others leave you bubbling with energy and creative, uplifting thoughts.

weed medicinal cannabis fatigue

Then there’s the combined effects of hundreds of cannabis compounds. Cannabinoids like CBD, THC, and CBG certainly play their part, but agents such as terpenes contribute as well. On top of that, all of these substances mutually affect each other through the entourage effect. That makes finding the best cannabis strain against fatigue quite a challenge, but don’t worry: we’ll help you along.

Taking a good look at yourself is another important step towards finding that strain. That is because the reasons for your fatigue may be very different from those of the next person. What exactly is causing you to feel so tired? You’ll find some of the most common factors below. Often, several of these factors add up to cause fatigue together.

There Is More To Weed Than THC Alone

Then there’s the added effects of hundreds of other compounds found in cannabis plants. Cannabinoids like CBD, CBG, and THC all play their part in the overall effects, but terpenes are another important component of any high. All of these substances also mutually influence each other’s effects by means of the entourage effect. That makes finding the right cannabis strain for specific kinds of fatigue a bit of a puzzle, but don’t worry: we’ll show you the way.

The fact that (chronic) fatigue can have different causes for everyone makes it extra important to look at your personal reasons for sleeping problems. What causes that tiredness? Is it lack of sleep? Or is it tension and stress, or a dull and listless feeling? Are you feeling happy and well? Below, we’ll list some of the main causes of fatigue, but keep in mind that combinations of these factors can occur, too.

Matching Cannabis With The Causes Of Fatigue

Tiredness and (chronic) fatigue can have different causes. Addressing your personal problem effectively requires you to identify its specific source. Below are five often most common ones:

sleep better with weed
Everybody loves a good night’s sleep.

1 – Lack Of Sleep

The most obvious reason for fatigue is a lack of sleep. Not getting much shuteye for one night is no big deal. Once you start to dip below getting 7 or 8 hours of daily sleep on a regular basis, feeling tired all the time should not come as a surprise.

2 – Poor Diet Habits/ Lack Of Appetite

Proper nutrition is a key contributor to your wellbeing. Your body and mind need fuel to do their jobs and stay fit. A varied diet with plenty of fibre, vitamins, and minerals will go a long way to feeling less knackered. If you’re not enjoying a healthy, balanced diet, that could explain your fatigue right there.

eat well sleep well cannabis

3 – Stress

We all know that dealing with stress takes a lot of energy. Your body starts releasing stress hormones that threaten to overload your systems if stress persists. Long term stress and anxiety are important causes for chronic fatigue.

4 – Chronic Pain

You may not realise this, but apart from being thoroughly unpleasant, pain can drain a person’s energy fast. Anyone suffering from chronic pain will notice how that power drain continues all day, every day. This explains how pain can contribute to tiredness and fatigue even if you never realized it could.

5 – Depression And Sadness

Your mood is another highly influential factor determining your energy levels. Chronic fatigue can be a consequence of depression, sadness, and grief. Such emotional states can make you feel listless and unmotivated, which is why depressed people often feel exhausted.

Using Cannabis Against Fatigue

The cannabis plant contains a whole host of useful compounds that can help counter fatigue problems. When picking a weed strain, always keep in mind what causes your own tiredness. That gives you the best perspective on the available cannabis seeds and the characteristics they represent.

Energetic High Or Sleepy Vibes?

Cannabis can help against fatigue because of the cannabinoids (THC, CBD and others) and terpenes it contains. These compounds cause the high and the many wonderful scents and flavours that cannabis can pack. They also influence each other’s effects. Interestingly, though, certain strains contain the right compounds to make you sleepy and relaxed, while others make you more productive and alert.

Sleeping well means getting up fit and fresh in the morning.

If you pick a strain that promotes relaxation and drowsiness before going to bed, it can help you sleep through the night and wake up with fresh energy. On the other hand, picking a more uplifting strain could help you feel more active and awake during the daytime. There are many options to try, and you’ll need to pay attention to what works best for you. Keeping a log or diary handy may prove helpful in that regard.

How Do Sativa And Indica Strains Affect Sleep?

Understanding the differences between effects calls for a crude distinction between all kinds of weed. One useful divide is the difference between sativa and indica strains, even though this is an oversimplification. These days, most strains are hybrid crossbreeds between indica and sativa strains, so we need to take these distinctions with a pinch of salt. Still, if we remain careful, we can draw some crude distinctions between indica and sativa weed when it comes to tackling tiredness.

Indica cannabis zaden vermoeidheid

Fatigue And Indica Cannabis Strains

Cannabis indica is a group of strains that mainly consists of indica-dominant marijuana variants (over 50% indica genetics). Broadly stated, indica weed directs it main effects on the body, relaxing and relieving the limbs and muscles. That makes inidica (dominant) weed strains an obvious choice for tiredness caused by lack of sleep. A heavy, lazy ffeeling in your body can help you unwind before turning in, as many people will confirm. If physical pain is the root cause of sleeplessness, indica weed with the right analgesic terpenes is a go-to solution, too.

On the other hand, an indica strain is probably not the best choice for fatigue during the day. These strains can reinforce feelings of tiredness and even cause couchlock: the distinc preference for vegging out on the couch. This makes inidca strains very suitable for tackling certain cases of sleeplessness and fatigue, but sativa strains have a few sleep-promoting properties to consider as well.

What Can Sativa Strains Do For Fatigue?

Cannabis sativa (dominant) strains, by contrast, chiefly make their effects felt on a mental level, i.e., in the brain. We call these ‘cerebral effects’ in fancy terms, although grower jargon usually sticks with headbuzz or brainbuzz instead. Many sativas are renowned for their uplifting effect on the mind. Anyone looking for more creative energy and activating mental stimulation should order sativa cannabis seeds to grow

sativa weed seeds against tiredness
Sativa strains are a source of natural energy.

In the specific case of sleeping issues, an uplifting sativa high can be a great hep to stay active and awake during the day. Conversely, strong sativa strains are less of a brilliant idea in the evening, as a fired-up brain will find it harder to fall asleep. If fatigue is linked to depression and low moods, though, a positive sativa high can help the mind unwind in some cases. A more cheerful pattern of thoughts can promote the onset of sleep, which could make everything look a bit more cheerful when you wake up in the morning.

Weed, Tiredness, And Lack Of Sleep

Not getting enough sleep is probably the most evident cause of fatigue, although many people sleep perfectly well every night and steel have chronic fatigue. If you’re having trouble falling asleep, or you keep waking up all through the night, the right type of cannabis can really help out. Indica-heavy strains can help relax your body, bringing a sense of calm that could help you doze off, or wake up less often before morning arrives. A terpene like myrcene can promote sleepiness, as can the less prevalent cannabinoid CBG. Cannabis edibles could be a good idea, too. Their effects tend to last longer than those of smoking cannabis. Having an edible product before going to bed could help you sleep through the night.

Edibles To Help You Sleep?

Edibles can also be an effective way to improve sleep. The effect of edible cannabis often lasts longer than that of smoked weed. Moreover, it doesn’t come with the health risks associated with smoking. It does usually take longer for the effects to kick in, though, so the best time to take then is about an hour before bedtime. eating the right cannabis edible before going to bed is a tried recipe for sleeping like a log all through the night.

Eat Better, Sleep Better

If you’re having trouble eating enough, or maintaining a healthy diet, cannabis could help improve your appetite. Poor diet habits can cause tiredness, so if weed can boost your motivation to eat well, then so much the better. Perhaps you’ve heard of the munchies: the cannabis-induced urge to gobble down every last scrap of food in the house. Using cannabis to fire up your appetite can be a good idea. Make sure to pack your fridge with fruit, vegetables and other healthy foods before you light up, though. You won’t get rid of fatigue by munching your way through bags of crisps and sweets all day long.

Weed Against Depression Related Tiredness

Cannabis can work well to counter fatigue symptoms caused by low moods and depression. Sativa strains in particular are known for their uplifting highs, able to boost your mood as you feel your tiredness fade. THC and CBD account for much of the effect, but terpenes can definitely add something extra to the mix. Limonene, for instance, can improve your mood, and limonene-rich strains can work for anxiety and depression issues as well.

weed tiredness

As you can see, certain cannabis can make you feel more energetic and more positive at the same time. That could tip the balance away from feeling tired all the time. Cannabis is never a cure for depression, mind you; but it can help alleviate some of the symptoms. Always consult your doctor on cannabis and depression, especially if you are already on medication.

Cannabis Against Stress Related Fatigue

If stress is a part of your daily life, you’ll have difficulty falling asleep. In addition, all that stress drains your energy, making you feel tired even before you get out of bed. Luckily, though, the right type of weed can help relieve stress-induced tiredness, too. As with other causes of fatigue, however, it is crucial to figure out what causes that stress, and how it is expressed.

If your stress expresses itself physically (high muscle tone, sweaty palms, increased heart rate), indica-dominant strains are your first option to try. Indica highs mainly aim for the body, where they cause a relaxed sensation. Does your stress express itself in mulling over the same thoughts all day, or in grumpy, irritable moods? In that case, a sativa strain may be best to try out. These types of weed help calm your mind and handle stressful situations. Cannabis can help manage fear and anxiety too, through the combined effects of terpenes and cannabinoids.

Chronic Pain, Medical Weed, And Tiredness

The analgesic properties of weed can help tackle tiredness caused by (chronic) pain. There are various strains with powerful pain-reducing and soothing effects. Both THC and CBD can help relieve pain. A comprehensive review of studies into cannabinoids and pain conducted in 2015 showed positive results. Cannabis can help relieve various kinds of pain. By helping reduce pain, cannabis can alleviate fatigue in two ways: by removing the pain that keeps you awake at night, and by preventing the pain from depleting your energy throughout the day.

CBG And CBD Oil For Better Sleeping Without The High

Apart from THC and the many terpenes present in cannabis, the cannabinoids CBD (cannabidiol) and CBG (cannabigerol) can also improve the quality of sleeping. Like THC, these compounds interact with the endocannabinoid system, which maintains the body’s internal balance. This ECS is also involved in our rhythms of sleep and wakefulness. Particularly for people who prefer not to smoke, trying CBG Oil or CBD Oil for (fatigue caused by) lack of sleep is a great option.

cbd cbg sleep well rest

These plant-based full spectrum supplements contain all the natural goodness of the cannabis plant, minus the THC. That means you will not get high from them, allowing you to carry out your daily activities just like you’re used to. In addition, both CBD and CBG offer many more benefits for a balanced and healthy lifestyle, making them worth a try for everyone.

The Best AG Cannabis Strains For Fatigue

With the theory out of the way, we can now turn to the practical implications. Which cannabis strains are often used to counter fatigue? What kind of weed can help you sleep better at night? And which types work against the underlying causes, such as stress, pain, or depression? A casual tour of our cannabis seeds range offers plenty of options to try.

We divide the results into two sections: one listing our best weed strains against tiredness for energy during the day; and another with the top AG strains to help you snooze off at night – or in broad daylight if you’re working the night shift.

The Dreamiest Indica Weed Strains For Tiredness

Top Bedtime Strain 1: Chocolato

Chocolato is a 70% indica hybrid that tastes every bit as dreamy as the perfect night’s sleep. Still this crossbreed between White Choco and California legend Gelato is more than just a joy for the palate; especially when it comes to dozing off. The lingering, relaxing body buzz Chocolato marijuana seeds embody is based on several factors. First and foremost, 24% THC is no laughing matter ( or is it!) – this accounts for much of the sedative effect, but don’t overlook the terpenes contained in this flavour bomb: myrcene, caryophyllene and humulene all have parts to play.

Even though the effect of Chocolato Homegrown is deeply soporific, it leaves the brain in a mildly activated state. As relaxation extends through the limbs, a floaty, dreamy sensation occupies the mind. That is a fine indica solution for anyone lying awake at night – after all, don’t we all want a chocolate ice cream before being sent to bed?

Top Bedtime Strain 2: Kosher Tangie Kush

Kosher Tangie Kush cannabis seeds accommodate a sophisticated inidca hybrid that has eased scores of fatigue issues around the world. Still, the 40% sativa content of Kosher Tangie Kush produces enough mental effects to bring you the best of both worlds. A lazy, contended, satisfied feeling stacks on top of that relaxed body vibe to make that sleepy feeling complete.

Myrcene and humulene are important flavours in the earthy and pungent aroma of Kosher Tangie Kush buds. A dash of limonene completes the package; not just in terms of taste, but also in the extra gentle touch that is further increased by 1 to 2% CBG in the palette. All in all, Kosher Tangie Kush cannabis seeds are pretty comprehensive source of sleepy joys, with a flavour melange that is highly suited for the best nightcap edibles!

The Best Sativa Strains To Keep You Awake

Top Wake-Up Strain 1: Amazing Haze

Amazing haze has a hyperbolic name for good reason; especially for those who want to tackle drowsy and sleepy feelings. Spicy caryophyllene and tasty myrcene boost the energizing effect of Amazing Haze. They also make for a wonderfully balanced flavour, and a scent that many people instantly associate with a world-famous cerebral high to make anyone lose the snooze.

Grapefruit Superstar marijuana seeds grow into highly uplifting plants that are ideal for countering daytime fatigue. With 90% sativa genetics in her DNA, this is our purest sativa strain, which is quite promising in terms of a brainbuzz sprinkled with touches of euphoria. No morning grumpiness can withstand Grapefruit Superstar, clearing the way for a day full of creative enterprise, no matter the weather!

GRAPEFRUIT SUPERSTAR weed against tiredness

The sweet and sour flavour of grapefruits is closely linked to the presence of limonene in the terpene profile. That adds some effervescence and zing to the effect, but it also helps growers make the plant more resistant to insects and other threats. Grapefruit Superstar can also help fight headaches and mental stress, so if those are what causes your fatigue, this is a fine pick for you.

Medical Cannabis Seeds: How To Grow Weed As Medicine

Growing medical cannabis – also known as medicinal marijuana, or prescription weed if officially prescribed by a medic – takes a slightly different approach than recreational growing. The reason for this difference is quality. Of course, recreational growers can be be just as serious about their quality levels, but growing medicinal cannabis is subject to stricter standards. Non-medicinal weed is usually grown to enjoy. Regular growers aim to get a particular taste, specific effects, staggering harvests, or simply the most impressive cannabis plant. Medicinal marijuana growers, by contrast, usually grow for very specific goals. This blog explores the specifics of how to grow weed for medical purposes.

Why Grow Medical Cannabis?

There are many different reasons for using and growing medicinal cannabis. Scientists keep discovering new potential medical benefits in all sorts of compounds in cannabis, including THC and CBD. These days, countries including the Netherlands are officially growing medicinal cannabis for sale in pharmacies. Dutch prescription cannabis, however, is no longer covered by health insurance. In the US, by contrast, medical use of marijuana is being legalized in an increasing number of states.

grow medical cannabis

Regulations in other countries vary, but getting prescription marijuana refunded can be tricky at best. This makes growing medical cannabis at home financially attractive for many patients around the world. Other reasons for medical home-growing include being dissatisfied with prescription marijuana, or a search for specific effects. All of these factors can make growing medicinal cannabis at home an interesting option.

The Many Medical Uses Of Weed

Cannabis has been used as medicine since time immemorial. The legendary Chinese ‘Red Emperor’ Shen Nung reportedly introduced cannabis (‘ma’ in China) over 4,000 years ago. Back then, the herb was used for a wide range of conditions, including gout, malaria, rheumatism, and constipation. Today, the medical uses of cannabis have been mapped more extensively by modern science, though much remains to be explored. Many different applications exist, but the most common medical uses of weed include the following at minimum:

(Chronic) Pain

Cannabis contains many cannabinoids like THC, CBD, and CBG that can help relieve pain and stop inflammation. Terpenes and flavonoids add to this analgesic capacity through the entourage effect.

Stress

THC, CBD, and terpenes can help calm down the mind and soothe the body, making weed a great natural option for stress and anxiety reduction.

Fatigue

While certain weed strains can make you feel drowsy and promote a good night’s sleep, other strains are uplifting, providing new energy to counter (chronic) fatigue.

Depression

Although excessive use of cannabis has been linked to increased likelihood of depression, many people actually use the plant to lift their mood. Sativa strains are a particularly popular choice here, although CBD cannabis seeds can help combat depression, too.

Headaches & Migraine

Various cannabinoids and other cannabis compounds can help counter headaches and migraines. A number of weed strains may help you control migraine symptoms in different ways.

If you’re looking to buy cannabis seeds for specific symptoms or conditions, check the dedicated blogs behind the links above for more info and our best strains for pain, depression, stress, and more!

Growing Medical Cannabis: Which Strain To Choose?

As mentioned, growing medicinal cannabis involves quite a bit of deliberation. The intentions of people using medicinal weed are usually very different from those of recreational cannabis consumers.

If, for instance, you want to grow weed to treat pain, your plant will need a cannabinoid profile to match. Whether you grow for personal use or for others, you want to be as effective against that pain as you possibly can. Some cannabis strains are more suited for this than others. You might end up at a high CBD strain, for instance. Our CBD cannabis seeds are developed especially for such grows. Still, finding the right medicinal cannabis involves more choices than just CBD or THC content.

growing medical cannabis

All of our seeds come with a strain profile, which includes indications of the medicinal properties of that particular strain. Always choose a recommended and experienced specialist such as Amsterdam Genetics to get the best seeds. After all, growing medical cannabis starts with finding the very best seeds available.

Sativa Or Indica As Medicinal Weed?

Choosing between indica and sativa strains depends largely on the effect you intend to achieve. Both types of cannabis are available as feminized seeds. These will get you the best returns on your investment: only female cannabis plants will yield your medicinal weed. Another tip for rookie growers is choosing autoflower cannabis seeds. These are usually easier to grow and allow for more annual harvests, especially indoors. Apart from that, everything depends on the specific symptoms you wish to counter.

Medical Marijuana And Terpenes

Cannabis contains many cannabinoids such as THC and CBD. On top of that, they carry compounds called terpenes. These plant chemicals give strains their distinct flavour and scent, but they do more. They protect plants from pests, for example, but moreover, all 100+ known terpenes have an effect on your body or mind. They are used in aroma therapy settings, for instance. Through the entourage effect, they can also interact with cannabinoids and flavonoids to produce additional effects, including medicinal ones. Terpenes are definitely a point to consider when choosing your medical marijuana strain.

We have dedicated blogs highlighting some of the most commonly found cannabis terpenes, along with their potential medicinal benefits. Check our info on the following important terpenes here:

Terpenes have medical properties, too.

Three Important Aspects Of Growing Medical Cannabis

Users of medicinal weed are not necessarily interested in feeling high or stoned. Instead, they try to achieve certain physical or mental effects. This is why the following aspects are very important in deciding which medicinal weed strain to grow.

Hygiene

The weed has to be clean and hygienic (free from pesticides, additives, fungi and pests). This level of purity is easiest to achieve in indoor grow settings, where you’ll have greater control over environmental factors, air and water quality, and nutrition. On the other hand, outdoor setups have greater potential for organic cannabis, which can be a plus for medical marijuana in and of itself.

Consistency

The harvest must be consistent in terms of quality and yields. You don’t want to run out of cannabis medicine once you start to notice its effectiveness. In theory, you could grow and harvest outdoors all year long in the right climate. Still, most growers find this easier to achieve using a grow tent or similar indoor grow room.

Reliability

The health effects of each harvest must be stable and reliable. This is where ordering high quality weed seeds comes in. Trusted seed suppliers are your best guarantee for consistent quality, so only buy from acclaimed vendors that provide you with enough information on the seeds they sell. The above argument for consistency and indoor growing can be applied to reliable effects in equal measure.

Growing Medical Marijuana: Clones Or Seeds?

Some say that growing medicinal cannabis using clones is easier than ordering cannabis seeds online. Allegedly, cloned plants ought to yield more consistent results, because their genetic makeup is always the same. Still, the growth and development of a clone is a natural process too. All sorts of external influences affect your harvest. Moreover, growing from seeds is usually easier, especially for less experienced growers, and finding good clones is more difficult than finding great seeds. All things considered, we suggest choosing high-quality cannabis seeds of a suitable strain and from a serious, experienced seeds specialist.

Indoors Or Outdoors?

Just like with any grow, you’ll need to decide whether to grow your medicinal weed indoors or outdoors. Both options come with their own pros and cons.

The big plus for indoor growing is the extent of control you have over circumstances such as lighting, temperature, and air circulation. Another major benefit is the ability to grow in all seasons, no matter the weather. This can be very convenient if growing medicinal cannabis leaves you dependent on your own harvest yields.

On the other hand, there are indications that cannabis plants grown outdoors are more balanced in terms of their cannabinoid and terpene profiles. This could be due to the fact that plants grown in the open air produce more varied organic compounds. They do so because they have to cope with varying conditions that affect the growth process. In addition, outdoor growing allows you to grow medicinal cannabis in the most natural way possible. The main limitation is climate, though. As mentioned, medical cannabis users tend to rely on year-round availability of their plant medicine. That’s pretty hard to realise when you’re growing in, say, Norway or Alaska.

Growing Organic Medical Cannabis

Understandably, pesticides are a big no-go in growing weed for medical purposes. Growing organically, however, goes well beyond going easy on pesticides. The soil that you grow your plants in is a major factor to consider, for instance.

Organic soil is literally alive with compost and natural micro-organisms. All that organic activity provides a wealth of diverse and comprehensive nutrition for your cannabis plants. This promotes prolific growth without the need to add chemicals. When harvest time approaches, you won’t find traces of artificial fertilizer or chemical plant nutes in your crops. Flushing your plants before the harvest helps clean out chemicals, but organic growing is much safer in this regard. It’s healthier, but connoisseurs also say it improves flavour and development of the active ingredients you’re after.

Pests And Mould

Apart from toxins, pests and fungi are the main threats for anyone growing medicinal cannabis. This applies to outdoor grows, but you can’t rule out these factors when growing indoors, either. Whether you grow indoors or out, though, If someone with fragile health uses medical cannabis by inhaling, the last thing you want is contaminated buds carrying germs and fungi, with all the potential health risks involved!

Indoor growers should take great care to keep their grow rooms a clean as possible, with good air circulation and minimum outside influences. Outdoor growers need to take special care to prevent mould like bud rot or mildew, although these can ruin indoor grows too. Both environments offer their own set of challenges here. Try to avoid use of pesticides and fungicides if possible, or you’ll just be replacing one health hazard with another. In fact, outdoor organic growing can give you an advantage here. Aphids can be countered organically, for example, using liquid nettle manure or ladybugs. That’s yet another round of pesticides you don’t need for your weed!

Protecting your weed against fungus after harvesting revolves around allowing it to dry through and through before allowing it to cure in airtight jars or bags. Fungus usually arises when weed is stored in vacuum conditions too soon, i.e., when it’s still too damp. Allow the drying and curing process to occur organically, and let it take some time. To this end, hang the buds out to dry in a dark, dry, and well-ventilated space. Don’t put them in jars to cure before they are completely dry. For optimal effects, allow some air to flow in for a few minutes every day.

How To Order Medical Cannabis Seeds

Growing medicinal cannabis at home calls for a fair bit of care and planning. Still, it is far from impossible: any grower can do it. A lot of it comes down to buying high quality seeds, a good balance between natural and hygienic growing, and some extra care and attention for the plants. If these conditions are met, anyone can get growing to realise their own medical weed supply, or a stable source of herbal medicine for vulnerable friends and loved ones.

Terpenes In Cannabis Linalool

Terpenes In Cannabis: Linalool

The tell-tale aromas of cannabis are largely due to the power of terpenes such as linalool. This aromatic compound is responsible for the lovely flowery scent that makes lavender such an attractive flower. That explains why linalool is often used in cosmetics, detergents, and other fragrant products. This terpene has much more in store than wonderful aromas, though. Research shows that the substance has analgesic and antimicrobial properties, and can boost resistance to stress. In addition to these medical options, linalool also has interesting consequences for the cannabis high you experience. This blog explores the possibilities of linalool, and lists our best high linalool cannabis strains.

Why Do Plants Produce Terpenes?

Terpenes are compounds produced by all plants, from flowers to trees, and even by certain animal species. Cannabis plants alone generate over 100 different terpenes, including linalool. These terpenes are made in special resin glands called trichomes. Along with cannabinoids and flavonoids, terpenes are responsible for the characteristic herbal scents of cannabis; however, their effectiveness goes well beyond smell alone.

No matter how attractive we find the aromas of pants and herbs, to plants, terpenes are crucial for survival. Their main purpose is protection, as terpenes repel insects that could otherwise decimate specimens by predation. On the other hand, many plants employ terpenes to attract pollinator insects to propagate the species.

Humans have used plants and herbs with high linalool content for centuries. Even today, the substance is often found in cleaning products, soap, shampoo, and skin creams. Currently, however, there is growing scientific interest in the medical applications of linalool.

Linalool In Cannabis: How Do Terpenes Alter The Effect Of Weed?

Of course, it’s all well and good to know how useful terpenes are for plants, but – to put it bluntly – what’s in it for us? Firstly, true gourmets will appreciate the tremendous variety of cannabis aromas and flavours. Linalool gives a subtle, yet exceptional twist to a strain’s bouquet, which is a true joy for connoisseurs.

Still, linalool is also involved in another set of special cannabis effects. There is increasing scientific attention for the health potential of terpenes, as they can be instrumental in a number of medical applications. That also makes terpenes worth considering for anyone keen on growing medical marijuana, which is cannabis with particular medicinal properties.

The Entourage Effect

The current focus on linalool is all about potential health effects caused by the compound itself. Still, some of the most interesting properties of linalool are linked to the entourage effect. This is the name for a mechanism by which cannabis ingredients mutually influence and even reinforce each other’s effects. This is usually due to the way in which cannabinoids work together with your endocannabinoid system (ECS). This is an important biological mechanism that safeguards the balance in your body.

linalool cannabis entourage effect
terpenes can influence cannabis effects in subtle ways.

All day long, your body is at work to maintain a dynamic equilibrium while the environment keeps on changing. This sense of balance is called homeostasis. Terpenes and cannabinoids exert all sorts of subtle influences on the ECS, and on the way in which active cannabis components interact with it.

Linalool In Cannabis: The Effects

Scent And Flavour

The scent of linalool is similar to that of lavender: a refreshing, flowery, yet herbal scent. It is often hard to pinpoint the scent in a cannabis bouquet, mainly because there are so many other terpenes that determine the smell of weed. Other well-known plants and herbs containing linalool include coriander, basil, blood orange, and laurel.

The scent of linalool reminds of lavender.

The Effect Of Linalool On Your Cannabis High

Linalool is known to enhance the relaxing effects of THC-rich cannabis strains. That produces a stress-busting entourage effect. In sativa-dominant strains, linalool can increase the sense of mental alertness that cerebral highs produce. Furthermore, linalool can improve quality of sleep after consumption, making high-linalool strains particularly suited as an evening-time nightcap. Adde bonus: the scent of linalool is reputed to keep mosquitoes away!

Medical Applications

Traditionally, plants containing lots of linalool have been used as herbal sedatives and tranquilizers to help people relax. The compound was known for ability to improve sleep, as well as for its anti-inflammatory capacity. We all know the sachets of lavender people put under their pillow to help them fall asleep. Herbal extracts containing linalool are also used in skincare products.

We have learned much since the early days of herbal medicine. Myrcene turns out to have antimicrobial properties in addition to its usefulness as a relaxant. Clearly, linalool is useful to humans as well as to plants. Among the medical applications of linalool are the following:

  • Anxiety and stress;
  • Alzheimer’s disease;
  • Pain and inflammation;
  • Bacterial infections

Mental Effects Of Linalool Cannabis Strains

Soothing And Calming

Linalool has always been regarded as a herbal source of calm and tranquillity. For many people, the scent of lavender alone is enough to trigger a relaxed mood. That makes high linalool strains an obvious choice for anyone dealing with tension, stress, and anxiety. Still, the uplifting qualities of this fresh and flowery terpene should not be underestimated either. That gives researchers ample reason to study the effects of linalool, whether combined with cannabis or not.

Clearly, attention to the soothing properties of linalool in on the rise. So far, however, all available studies were performed on mice. This limits their general applicability for use by people, even though they did demonstrate how linalool can help calm down the mind in case of fear and anxiety. In one study, mice were kept in a space where linalool was evaporated. One hour later, the mice were compared in terms of sleep duration, body temperature, coordination, and movement. It was clear that the linalool group individuals spent less time moving while they slept more. The most positive finding, though, was the complete lack of coordination impairment. Apparently, linalool can have relaxing effects without influencing coordination or perception. That’s more than most synthetic tranquilizers can claim!

Resistance To Stress

Linalool can help make the immune system more resistant to the negative consequences of stress. Stress reveals itself by changes in white blood cell counts throughout the body. The percentage of lymphocytes drops, while neutrophile levels (another type of white blood cell) rise at the same time.

After receiving linalool, rats showed no such changes to their immune systems. This allowed the terpene to prevent stress-induced changes to the expression of DNA traits. In other words: even if you are genetically predisposed to respond in stressful ways, linalool sems able to prevent that genetic trait from determining your behaviour. That seems to make linalool an interesting option for anyone facing a stressful test, exam, or presentation.

linalool cannabis

Scientists assume this effect is caused by linalool’s ability to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. This is the part of the nervous system that is active while you rest and relax. The system operates almost entirely at an unconscious level, which prevents you from controlling it on purpose. That makes a compound such as linalool all the more useful, since it gives us a way to actively control autonomous responses to stress. This is how linalool may help counter the harmful effects of stress.

Medical Cannabis: Physical Effects Of Linalool

Health, Stress, And High Linalool Cannabis

Some would say that the link between stress regulation and high linalool cannabis strains is reason enough to consider this substance. Still, there is much more to explore by further research into the potential of linalool. We’ll provide a brief summary of some of the possibilities currently under review.

Alzheimer’s Disease

Linalool just might prove highly promising in the battle against Alzheimer’s. A 2015 study involved elderly mice suffering from Alzheimer-like conditions, which were given a dosis of linalool once every three days. It turned out that those mice that received the terpene showed improved learning and spatial memory performance as well as better risk awareness. Moreover, their brains showed considerably less inflammation markers.

As the researchers point out, these findings seem to imply that linalool may help revert the progress of Alzheimer’s disease. It can help restore cognitive and emotional functions by its anti-inflammatory properties. Even though this study only involved mice, prohibiting any generalizations towards humans, the results are promising nonetheless.

Linalool As A Cannabis Painkiller

Linalool also appears to produce various effects on muscle and nerve tissue, which makes it an interesting painkiller candidate. It can function as a muscle relaxant by dampening the signal strength of acetylcholine. This compound is necessary for muscle contraction.

Linalool can also have sedative and analgesic properties by desensitizing the cells of the spinal cord. This effect prevents these nerve cells from relaying pain impulses to the brain.

Amsterdam Genetics Top Linalool Strains

Adding up all of these interesting traits makes linalool an interesting factor in any grower’s decision-making. Anyone looking for high-linalool cannabis strains has ample choice at Amsterdam Genetics, but the following two strains make the top of our linalool-heavy terpene profiles.

Top Linalool Strain 1: Amnesia Haze

Without a doubt, the world’s most famous high linalool cannabis strain is Amnesia Haze. The taste of Amnesia Haze is as complex and multi-layered as it is legendary. Although it is impossible to prove, Amnesia Haze may be a real contender for World’s Most Appreciated Strain Ever.

amnesia haze terpenen

Without a doubt, the high linalool value of this strain has been a factor in that appreciation. After all, we have included a feminized and regular variant of this strain to our seeds range for a reason. Amnesia Haze is renowned for her deeply relaxing sativa headbuzz. That is partly due to her 70% sativa background, but do not underestimate the twist that linalool gives to this cannabis classic. That is equally true for the high of the strain as for the herbal scent that any connoisseur can tell from twenty feet away!

Top Linalool Strain 2: Blue Amnesia Haze

Blue Amnesia Haze is a new addition to the Amnesia dynasty, with direct descent from our linalool champion strain. Blue Amnesia Haze manages to camouflage the flavour of linalool among the spicy and sweet citrus aromas that dominate the terpene profile. The effect of the high linalool content makes itself felt, though, particularly in the pleasantly relaxing high she conveys. Such a refined headbuzz is a tell-tale sign of a terpene entourage effect. That’s probably for the better, because at about 24% THC, Blue Amnesia Haze is no strain for the faint-hearted.

Blue Amnesia haze cannabis linalool

Blue Amnesia Haze is a great innovation that provides a new spin on the Amnesia effect. A fine choice for anyone in search of some R&R, as well as for growers looking for a relaxed way to work with sativa genetics. Her ten-week flowering period is relative manageable for a sativa hybrid, and Blue Amnesia tends to do even better in outside conditions than indoors. If the weather plays along , the yield of Blue Amnesia Haze is yet another reason fro a relaxed smile across the face – and that’s before the linalool begins to take effect, mind you!

CBD control

Can CBD Control a THC High Effect?

Can CBD temper the high caused by THC? You’ve probably heard about it, but is it actually true? Of course, there are plenty of people who appreciate the effects of THC, but not everyone does; not all the time, anyway. People increasingly use weed for medical reason, for instance, and not all of these people appreciate the psychoactive effects of THC. And how does CBD work in case you get too much THC in your system? Can you tone down the impact of a too intense high with CBD weed, CBD Oil, or a bag of tasty CBD Gummies? High time for some research and a bit of CBD mythbusting!

CBD, The Most Important Cannabinoid After THC?

Growers around the world are getting hyped about CBD Weed. They order special CBD cannabis seeds to harvest as much of this useful compound as possible, for medical or recreational use. But what exactly is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol. By now, it has become a famous abbreviation, since more and more people discover CBD for the useful, exceptional cannabis compound it is. In contrast to THC (tetra-hydrocannabinol), CBD will not get you high. The main reason for its growing popularity is its many potential health applications. CBD supplements such as CBD Oil, Tablets, or CBD Coffee and Gummies are popular choices for natural support of:

  • A strong immune system;
  • Pain reduction;
  • Improved sleep;
  • Countering infections and inflammation;
  • Protecting (nerve) cells;
  • Rapid muscle recovery after exercise

The list of potential CBD applications is getting longer by the week. But what about the interactions between CBD and THC in the body? Can CBD really counter the high produced by THC? That would be great news for anyone who accidentally took a few hits too many. And can you just add some CBD weed to your THC cannabis for some added nuance in your high? All the signs are here to suggest that it works. To find out why, we first need to draw a quick comparison between these two famous cannabinoids.

The Similarities And Differences Between CBD And THC

Obviously, the main difference between THC and CBD is the fact that THC can get you high while CBD cannot. On the molecular level, the two compounds are pretty hard to tell apart. That’s not surprising, as marijuana plants create both compounds from the same ‘mother of all cannabinoids’: CBG. Still, just one minute chemical difference is the cause of THC’s uniquely psychoactive effects. CBD has no properties that alter perception or cognition: it is entirely non-psychoactive.

Both CBD and THC can have effects on the body and the brain, however. They do so by interacting with two types of receptors. These are the CB1 and CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system (ECS). They are situated in the central nervous system and throughout the rest of the body. CB1 and CB2 receptors govern all kinds of processes associated with your immune system, your emotions, metabolism, and other critical functions. Both cannabinoids engage with these receptors in different ways. The effect of THC is caused by activation of CB1 receptors located in the brain. This activation alters sensory perception of stimuli, influences memory and mood, and increases heart rate, for instance.

endocannabinoid system

CBD (cannabidiol), causes altogether different effects. Although this cannabinoid also influences CB1 receptors, it functions as an antagonist, meaning that CBD dampens the effect that THC causes. So does that make CBD useful for countering the effects of THC? Initial research results certainly seem to point in that direction.

Less Stoned With CBD?

If you are a cannabis fan or a grower, chances are you have gotten slightly too high or stoned at some point. The effects of cannabis can be tricky to anticipate; especially when edibles are involved. So how great would it be if a bit of CBD could modify the severity of that high? If it’s anything to go by, we keep hearing promising anecdotes from experienced connoisseurs.

“I hadn’t smoked for quite a while, so I was slightly worried that the high might be too overwhelming. Luckily, the opposite proved to be true.”

One of our colleagues decided it was time for some proof of the pudding. This is his personal report on his CBD/THC experience:

“In the run-up to my ‘experiment’, I hadn’t used any cannabis for over a month. That served to intensify the effects and make them more noticeable. I rolled a cocktail of Blue Monkey CBD weed and Super Silver Haze to test the combined effects.

It was a tropically hot day in Amsterdam, so I went for a swim with some friends. I hadn’t smoked for quite a while, so I was slightly worried that the high might be too overwhelming. To my surprise, the opposite proved to be true.

The first thing I noticed was a profound high sensation in my head, but it felt comfortable and not too intense, despite some earlier negative experiences with haze and Netherhash strains. Later on, while I was in the water, I felt a strong body high as I was swimming around. All things considered, it seemed the CBD did just what I hoped it would do.

blue monkey cannabis

What Stood Out

The first thing that struck me was my greater-than-expected tolerance to THC; probably because of the CBD weed. We went through a whole gram of Super Silver Haze without any trouble. That would probably have been too heavy and intense without the CBD. That pretty much confirms my first assumption.

The second thing that stood out was the very ‘hazy’ sensation I went through despite the CBD, along with a strong body high. The typical haze effects never got uncomfortable though, no matter how strong they got. A real best of both worlds experience, so to speak.

Conclusion

I don’t think it’s hard to do the math here. I think I’ll keep some CBD Oil, Gummies, or Chocolate handy whenever I feel like trying some strong haze or other weed, or if I decide to smoke after a long bout of abstinence.

I would also advise any inexperienced smokers to keep a bag of CBD Gummies or other CBD products nearby, just in case they get too high. And since CBD has a lot of potential health benefits anyway, I’d recommend giving it a try anyway.”

How CBD Can Control A THC High

Clinical trials have shed some scientific light on the exact effects of CBD and THC on CB1 receptors. These insights may have brought us closer to development of cannabis-based medication. We already knew that CBD is capable of partially blocking CB1 receptor activation by THC. This led researchers to believe that CBD was a relatively weak antagonist. However, this theory proved insufficient to account for the specific effects of CBD at the cellular level.

cbd weed thc high
CBD has caught the attention of both researchers and growers.

A 2015 study clarified the matter to considerable extent. It turns out that CBD can bind to a specific site on the CB1 receptor, which differs from the favourite contact point of THC. After connecting to this location, CBD can alter the shape of the receptor to a point where THC finds it difficult, though not impossible, to connect to the same receptor. This lessens THC’s ability to activate CB1 receptors. These days, CBD is known as an allosteric modulator, which is a substance capable of altering another substance’s effects by binding to specific sites.

Another study, published in Front Psychology magazine, investigated whether CBD can reduce the effects of THC from a different perspective. The research was aimed at finding out whether CBD can counter the negative side-effects of THC, such as paranoia and memory loss. The analysis demonstrated that CBD has neuroprotective capacities that shield nerve cells from damage. Apparently, cannabidiol can control the effects of THC in more than one way.

CBD, THC, And The Entourage Effect

Research into the many valuable compounds found in cannabis plants is still underway. All too often, this quest is complicated precisely because of weed’s huge range useful ingredients, including cannabinoids, flavonoids, terpenes, and more. Whenever you isolate one substance from all the others to study its effects, you disrupt the natural context in which they occur. When used simultaneously, the various ingredients in cannabis mutually affect each other’s effects. This mechanism is known as the entourage effect. If, for instance, you take only CBD, the cannabinoid will produce different effects compared to CBD taken along with all other cannabinoids, including THC.

order blue monkey cbd weed seeds
Our specially developed Blue Monkey CBD strain.

However, using cannabis for medicinal reasons also makes it hard to determine which cannabinoid does what in the overall effect. All cannabis strains have different proportions of THC, CBG, CBD, and many other compounds besides. That also makes it tricky to pinpoint exactly how much CBD counters the effect of THC. With research in this area still underway, we need more studies to get conclusive results.

The Perfect Cannabinoid Ratio

All cannabis strains carry some amount of CBD; just as every type of weed contains at least some THC, no matter how little certain hemp crops may hold. The question remains, however, which CBD:THC ration produces the exact effect a consumer is looking for. To give you an idea of the differences in highs (or lack thereof) between strains, we compare three imaginary strains; each with a different CBD to THC ratio.

CBD/THC Ratio 1:0 – No High, Plenty Of Effects

Our first example is a ‘true’ CBD strain. The proportions are similar to those of our own Blue Monkey CBD strain, at a CBD/THC ratio of about 40:1. Here, the effects of CBD definitely hold the upper hand. This strain will not get you high, but you will still notice an uplifting effect in terms of your mood. A pure CBD weed strain like Blue Monkey is the perfect match for anyone looking to gain maximum benefits from cannabidiol’s advantages, without any psychoactive effects.

CBD/THC Ratio 1:5 – A Nuanced High

This second example is a strain with fairly high CBD content that is still dominated by THC in its cannabinoid profile. Strains such as these are in the league of our Choco Cheesecake strain. Which has considerable THC levels and yet contains between 1.5 and 2% CBD. This hybrid indica cannabis strain produces a substantial high, but it also offers additional relaxing and other effects due to the relatively high CBD presence in its buds.

Choco Cheesecake has CBD running in the family.

CBD/THC Ratio 1:10 – THC All The Way

At the far end of the spectrum we find strains carrying much more THC than CBD. So much so, in fact, that the effect of CBD is hardly noticeable. In strains like these, THC is bound to determine the high. Highly potent strains like our Super Silver Haze cannabis seeds leave no grower in doubt: this harvest will bring intense highs – a long-lasting headbuzz full of creative energy, in this particular case.

Getting To Work: Growing CBD Cannabis Seeds

No matter what the preferred ratio may be, using CBD in combination with THC always holds certain advantages. These could be related to medical marijuana use, but they may just as well help control the effects of a too intense high. You’ll just need to experiment a little to find out which ratios work best for you. One way to do just that is by growing CBD marijuana seeds, and then combining the result with a THC strain to experience their added effects. Mixing high CBD strains with strong THC strains grants maximum control over those optimal ratios.

Growers can also look for optimal balance between CBD and THC in that one perfect strain. Our Amsterdam Genetics seeds catalogue always states average THC, CBD, and other cannabinoid percentages for every strain we sell. Make sure to take these into account while ordering CBD or THC seeds online.

Keep Some CBD Treats Handy, Just In Case

Of course, you can also influence a THC high by taking a CBD supplement. The dedicated connoisseur will always make sure to have some tasty CBD ‘quenchers’ nearby. Our CBD nutrition gives you plenty of easy options to do just that.

Simply order some CBD Gummies or brew yourself a nice cup of CBD Coffee for a healthy, THC buffering snack. That way, you’ll keep your body balanced with an extra helping of CBD, while you always have a quick fix ready for whenever the effect of THC becomes a little too hot to handle.

You see: even though cannabinoids have many secrets left to uncover, CBD cannabis strains are clearly worth your while. Whether for medical or recreational use, CBD has something to offer for any grower, connoisseur, and gourmet cannabis lover!

low stress training cannabis stretch

Low Stress Training For Improved Cannabis Yields

Low Stress Training (LST) is a means of directing the growth of your cannabis plants. It increases your control over their height and shape. Although Low Stress Training is by no means necessary for growing, it can improve yields by making more effective use of available light and space. This is a gentle type of training, aiming to keep stress for your plants down to a minimum. LST is a pretty simple technique that anyone can try – less stress for growers and plants alike; how great is that? If you feel like Low Stress Training a go, read on to find out what LST entails and how to apply it properly.

Big shoutout to Totogrow UK for his masterful tips and images!

Low Stress Training: Directing Cannabis Growth

All plants are hardwired to grow towards the light, because that is their prime source of energy. If you leave your cannabis plants at liberty to grow as they like, they will try to grow tall and develop most of their leaves on the lower branches, with a single tall cola or flower bud at the top. That means nearly all nutrients are directed to the main cola, too. Any remaining buds on the side branches will remain small and less well-developed. This phenomenon is called apical dominance. It doesn’t mean that a marijuana plant is in poor shape; this is the normal, natural growth pattern of the species.

low stress training weed plants tutorial
Untrained cannabis plants tend to grow bushy, with one main cola at the top.

Still, any grower willing to make a few light interventions to this natural state of affairs using low stress training techniques can increase the yields of their cannabis plants. LST encourages plants to develop multiple well-developed buds rather than a single big one. Low stress training guides the growth of the plant, allowing for uniform canopies and improved air circulation for the plant as a whole. This leads to more even distribution of growth hormones and nutrients, promoting simultaneous development of several big, healthy buds.

low stress training how to
LST helps create broadly spaced plants with multiple big cola buds.

How To Plan Low Stress Training

Anyone interested in applying LST should start out in the growth stage of the plant’s life cycle. That’s when the stems of a cannabis plant are most pliable. Do wait until you see at least three nodes on each plan, with the first side branches growing from these nodes. Low stress training can also be applied later on in the early weeks of the flowering stage, further promoting light exposure of all leaves. Don’t use this technique on fully grown plants, though. Mature stems are too rigid, which increases the risk of damaging them in the process.

In essence, low stress training involves bending stems and branches of cannabis plants in strategic places, without applying too much force. The idea is that LST should not cause stress to the plant. That way, it can adapt easily and continue growing without issues. All you need for low stress training is soft plant binds or soft coated garden wire, a hand drill, and a pair of scissors. Start the training when the main stem and branches are long enough to allow downward bending.

LST is suited for just about any cannabis strain, including autoflowers and feminized seeds.

Low Stress Training, Step 1: Anchoring

When your weed plants are tall enough, drill a series of holes into the edge of your flower pot using a hand drill. These will serve as the anchor points to secure any wires you may use. You’ll only need these holes if you choose to use wires; premade plant benders can be found in any gardening centre and make wire unnecessary, except perhaps for bending your plant’s main stem.

Low Stress Training, Step 2: Bending The Main Stem

Take the main stem and carefully bend it downwards, until it runs almost parallel to the floor. Make sure not to apply too much force, or you’ll risk snapping the stem and seriously damaging the plant. Don’t fix wires too tightly either, as this will cut off the nutrient distribution and block circulation.

Low Stress Training, Step 3: Shaping The Plant

Plants van be shaped in several ways. Some growers prefer shaping their stems like a rolled-up snake, circling their way around the flower pot. Another method involves securing side branches after bending them away from the main stem, giving the plant more of a spider-like shape. Regardless of design, the essence of LST is bending branches downwards. Since the plant will try to grow back up, you’ll create a broad, fan-like structure. That allows the light and fresh air to reach all parts of the cannabis plant in equal measure.

LST is all about bending stems and branches downward, allowing them to grow back up in a new, spacious shape.

Low Stress Training, Step 4: Maintenance And Check-Ups

LST is an ongoing affair that lasts all throughout the plant’s growth. Of course, plants will keep on producing new branches and leaves as they grow, so you’ll need to keep checking up on the progress. Keep securing new shoots, and direct their growth as they get larger. You may also want to trim away excess foliage to ensure optimal lighting throughout the plant’s structure. Remember that the goal is to keep the canopy as evenly spread as possible. The result will be well-developed plants with loads of big, bulging buds.

The above method for directing growth with LST can be quite laborious. You can try another approach by using low stress Screen of Green or Sea of Green techniques, which can achieve similar goals using different means.

Combining Techniques: Low Stress Training After Topping

Another way to apply the principle of low stress training is by topping, or even fimming, the plant before using LST. Although topping and fimming are not particularly stressless techniques, they can serve as a great point of departure for your low stress training regime. Topping involves cutting the upper growth tip from your weed plant. That will trigger the plant to grow two new tips instead. Fimming is a cruder type of topping, which involves cutting right through the middle of growth tips to try and make the sprout up to four new tips rather than just two. The new sprouts that result are perfect for bending. That means your cannabis plant can now add extra lateral growth from the point where it was topped or fimmed.

In the video below, expert grower Totogrow sows just how to go about low stress training after topping. Note the handy benders he uses instead of wire. They are available from any garden centre, so if you want even less stress during low stress training, these gadgets are your best friends.

The Difference Between Low And High Stress Training

High stress training is another set of techniques meant to direct plant growth. This involves other techniques, such as the aforementioned fimming technique and supercropping. As the name suggests, however, these high stress techniques cause more stress for your plants. Inexperienced growers run considerable risks of hurting their plants in the process. Then again, using HST will generally produce even better harvests than LST can achieve.

Ultimately, though, any grower is free to decide for themselves which techniques work best. Our other Grow Blogs contain loads more useful tips and techniques to explore. Whatever you decide to do, however, always keep in mind that all forms of training and growing depend on ordering great cannabis seeds. Thankfully, you’ve found your way to the AG seeds catalogue already, so we’re pretty sure that won’t cause you any unnecessary stress!

Happy Training!
